The May 2009 issue of Los Angeles Magazine’s feature story is 101 Cheap Eats. I picked it up at the supermarket last night out of curiousity. Honestly, I just assumed that I have probably eaten at all or most of the restaurants detailed in the story, but to my surprise, I have only visited an handful. Here are the ones that Los Angeles Foodie has conquered:

I’m thoroughly impressed by Los Angeles Magazine’s thorough exploration of good, cheap eats in our city. And I’m looking forward to putting a check mark next each and every one of the restaurants on the list. I have a feeling that a few months from now, this issue is going to be pretty ragged and dog-eared. My only complaint? The mouth-watering burger on the cover is the work of a food stylist and not a local burger joint. Why would you do that to me?

I loved this article too! I had eaten at enough of the places that I could feel a bit smug, like I’m not TOTALLY clueless. But they had so many that I had not eaten at, that looked great, that now I have many more adventures just waiting to happen.

And yes, I forsee my copy becoming pretty dogeared as well : )

@Burger Boy: I’m right there with you on Baby Blues. In fact, I’m not much of a fan at all. Having the best BBQ in Venice isn’t saying much. Plus it’s overpriced. But meat is expensive, so BBQ is rarely cheap. If you are hungry, drive the extra 15 minutes to J n J or JR’s.

visited the Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery as it received rave reviews… didn’t get a chance to taste their offerings though. my bf accidently dropped a bottle of seasoning after nearly being sideswiped by an employee and the cart he was wheeling around. at the register, we were informed we would be charged for two. we didn’t feel we were at fault for the damage of the one we dropped to which they responded their cameras would prove otherwise. we waited while they reviewed the tape.. shortly thereafter, the groceries we had been waiting to purchase were removed from the register and we were asked to leave and to never return. the manager stated the owner saw no one else in the tape to have provoked the icident as claimed by my bf. if they had indeed reviewed the tapes, they would clearly see that yes, what we claimed was true. it was absurd they insisted otherwise and simply shunned us away. worthwhile food you say? well, please take note of the service – nonexistent.
