The Los Angeles Foodie Rating:

The Summary:
The highest praise I have for Phil’s is, “Phil’s gets the job done.” It’s good food served fast and with a smile. They have a great location in one of my very favorite food destinations in all of Los Angeles, and they keep longer hours than most other food choices at The Farmer’s Market. Phil’s is a solid breakfast joint, and most of their deli options (including a so-so pastrami sandwich) are good but not great.
The Place:
Right out of the gate, Phil’s wins big points for being at the Farmer’s Market, which is Los Angeles Foodie’s destination of choice when traveling with a hungry group of out-of-town guests. Phil’s is located directly off the east patio, right in the thick of everything, so the restaurant is nearby great seating (including one of the very few tables adjacent power outlets for those working on laptops) and perfect for people-watching. Along one side is swivel stool counter dining,

and another side takes orders and displays the deli cold case selections. Phil’s is also unique because it is one of few stall at the Farmer’s Market to be accessible from all four sides (though one side is just a wall – so really it’s only accessible from three sides).
The Food:
The only reason Phil’s doesn’t get “five out of five” is because the food really isn’t great. It’s good. It’s fine. It’s just not great. I have tried many things on the menu, but my old standby is a Denver omelet with wheat toast, tomatoes, and a side of bacon. The omelet is filled with thick pieces of ham, onions, and bell peppers, and for some reason it stays steaming hot for 30 minutes.

The eggs are usually a bit overcooked, but it’s not a huge deal because, again, the food is good – just not great. This particular plate is a bit on the expensive side at around 13 dollars. But you’ll notice that the side of bacon transforms this single breakfast into two breakfasts: an omelet, and a BLT.
The menu includes breakfast all day, all of the expected deli sandwiches including french dips and pastrami, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, and cold drinks.
The Service:
Another one of Phil’s winning hands is the fact that is seems to always be open, even when everything else is closed. Most other city directories have the hours listed wrong. Phil’s opens early – 7am on weekdays. And at least one commenter on Yelp noticed that when other shops and restaurants are racing to close-up shop, Phil’s is still taking orders and filling orders right up until closing time. If your timing is right, you’ll run into me at Phil’s. I’m there almost every Friday morning. The counter guys are always cheerful and friendly, which is a challenge for other restaurants that are as busy as Phil’s. It takes practice to be polite and efficient all at the same time.
