Nom Nom Truck

I absolutely love the new gourmet food truck culture that’s fast springing up in Los Angeles, thanks to the Kogi Korean BBQ taco truck and other similar social media successes. Taking great food and putting it on wheels is a fantastic idea. And at the same time, I’m overwhelmed by the number of trucks out there that I still have to try, not to mention catch at the right time and place. (So thanks to folks like FindLAFoodTrucks.com for aggregating all these delicious roving restaurants for me.)
In any case, I was happy to stumble across the Nom Nom truck last week, and to do so at a time when I was hungry and there wasn’t a line around the block. I ordered the NomNom 6-inch combo, which includes a 6-inch sandwich, two tacos and a drink, all for $7.

I got the grilled pork tacos, and they were excellent. The meat was tender and well prepared, but the marinated onions, cucumber, carrots, and fresh cilantro were really the stars of these tacos.

As great as the tacos were, the sandwich (known as bánh mì, a Vietnamese specialty) put them to shame. I ordered the Vietnamese “deli special” — a baguette stuffed full of ham, pâté, pork loaf and head cheese. And, no kidding, it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in years. The garnishes were similar to those on the tacos, with a few jalapenos for an added (but subtle) kick.

I highly recommend you give it a try. (Even those of you out there with an innate aversion to eating something called “head cheese” — I promise you won’t regret it.)
