Cole’s PE Buffet Reopens with The Varnish Bar
Tweet
Cole’s famous French Dip eatery and bar reopened in December of 2008 with lots of balloons and good eats. To coincide with what was (more or less) Cole’s 100th anniversary, they were selling tickets for 100 cents each. Each ticket could be redeemed for a sandwich, a pecan pie, or a cold beer:

And just last night, Cole’s opened its newest feature of the renovation: The Varnish Bar. I recommend checking out the simplest website of all time (Hurry. They’ll probably update it soon). Thank you to Thrillist LA for the photo.

The sanchwiches were amazing (turkey and beef), and the Atomic Mustard was, indeed, atomic. Delicious little pecan pies rounded out a few sandwiches and a few too many cold beers. I must admit that I longed for the dingy, poorly-lit interior of the Cole’s of my past, but the fact that it’s still alive for now is good enough for me. As for The Varnish Bar, I have yet to visit. So I look foward to some feedback from fellow foodies.
Here are some more photos of the opening.

The Cole's neon sign is all cleaned up.

That guy in the bike shorts was freaking me out.

Another one of Cole's great neon signs.

The front kitchen was very small but efficient.

The bar looks pretty much the same... and ever so much more appealing when covered with 100-cent beers.

Turkey and beef French Dips, horseradish, Atomic Mustard, and pecan pie.

The Atomic Mustard lives up to its name.
