A Los Angeles Landmark
Los Angeles is one of the largest cities in the world, but sometimes it doesn’t feel that way. Many Angelenos, including me, are guilty of spending too much time in their comfort zones. But with this blog as proof, I do my best to be a tourist in my own city. I have lived in Los Angeles for almost ten years, and I make it a point to visit a new restaurant or landmark at least once per week. I encourage you to do the same since there is so much this great city has to offer.

One of the most spectacular culinary sites in all of Los Angeles is right in the center of the action. Grand Central Market is a huge, open-air produce stand, hot food restaurant, butcher shop, and bakery in the middle of downtown LA. Many people I have asked don’t even know it’s there, but it hasn’t moved since 1917. Thankfully, downtown is in the midst of a rebuilding phase and a resurgence in popularity. Let’s hope the city is able to strike the correct balance between gentrification and preservation because the renters at Grand Central Market can’t compete with The Coffee Bean and The Gap. There seems to be a growing sense of civic pride in Los Angeles’s residents, so I have high hopes.

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables at every turn, the market is home to some of the best Salvadorian pupusas in the city. Other curiosities like apothecaries and belt buckle vendors dot the grid of stalls. This location is an amateur photographer’s dream come true (I only wish I had more photos to share with you on this post). And since you are so close, take a ride on the newly-reopened Angels Flight if you have the courage.
