The Los Angeles Foodie Rating:

The Summary:
This place gets an extra rating point for having such awesome ambience and not changing a thing for the last several decades. This is the exact type of place that I love to go, especially when I’m having a rotten day. Spots like Steak Corral cheer me up. The building, the dining room decor, and the service were all exceptional. The food itself made from affordable cuts of meat which means that you should not expect great things. But the food at Steak Corral isn’t supposed to be great. It is a family place to dine out on a budget, and it offers good food for a fair price.
The Place:
It doesn’t get much cheesier than Steak Corral when it comes to western-themed restaurants. Cowboy paintings are all over the walls, as are moonshine jugs, models of covered wagons, puns like “westrooms,” and a fiberglass statue of a masked bandit in the corner, ready to rob a train.

The outdoor sign is a classic example of Whittier signage that has been well-maintained and virtually unchanged in decades. The building has a log cabin / outhouse feel to it – not in size or smell but in spirit.

Cacti abound out front, and hiding among the vegetation is little fiberglass cowboy holding his lasso and welcoming passersby on Washington Boulevard to come in and sit for a spell.
The Food:
This isn’t Morton’s, but it’s good. Your order your food from a huge wooden menu that hangs from the ceiling, and while cookie rustles up the grub, you set yourself up with drinks and fixin’s from the long covered wagon that runs the length of one end of the restaurant. I tried their cheeseburger and a steak sandwich accompanied by onion rings. The burger was just fine but nothing to get overly-excited about. The steak sandwich, served on garlic toast, was excellent. I would deduct points for the fact that the bottom slice of bread was soaked in juices were the juices not so delicious.

The onion rings were fantastic, and I would return again for these alone. Both the steaks and the hamburger were cooked to-order correctly. Everything that was supposed to be hot arrived piping, and the cool stuff (hamburger sides) was crispy and fresh.
The Service:
The staff was very friendly, and they were happy to show me around the place as soon as I expressed interest. I didn’t get any rolling eyes when I asked for several items on the menu to be explained, and from an inexpensive family restaurant, that’s unfortunately saying something. The entire staff seemed to be in generally good spirits, and all of our food arrived with a smile.
