The Summary:
The Donut Hole still stands to remind us of how awesome Southern California is. Like many other postwar architectural icons, The Brown Derby is gone, Tail o’ The Pup is gone (hopefully to return some day soon), and so are many others that have fallen victim to time, disinterest, and the wrecking ball. It’s too bad because The Donut Hole is going strong as a local anchor-point of the La Puente community, which goes to show that buildings shaped like the foods they serve can be timeless and fun.
The Place:
The real reason to visit is because you drive through the middle of two giant doughnuts to place and pick up your order. The Donut Hole is one of the few remaining examples of programmatic (or mimetic) architecture that was once popular in Southern California. The building and grounds are well-maintained making it a great place to visit as a stop on road trip of local landmarks. Remember that The Donut Hole is cash only (have you noticed that all of the best places are cash only?).

The Food:
I tried several different doughnuts, and they are tasty, large, and reasonably-priced, but I wasn’t blown away by anything. They are fresh, handmade doughnuts, which is nice to see, but they aren’t among the best I’ve had.
The Service:
The lady working the drive-up window was friendly and answered the annoying questions I always ask about how long the place has been there (40 years), what the locals think about it (they love it and are fiercely loyal), etc. There is something cozy about the interaction between the lady at the window and the patrons in the car; I think it’s because you are in the dark, enclosed corridor between the two big doughnuts.
